Validate one slot image — magic, commit word, CRC, kind, length — and return its generation, without touching the payload.

Mount scans run on this: a scan’s working set stays one slot buffer plus the eight-byte candidate, and the winning slot is decoded exactly once after the scan settles. Passing whole Stored values through a scan costs a MAX_PAYLOAD copy per step, and on the embedded boot path those copies land on the one stack every task shares.
